Sandy Studdard’s Art Process

How I Paint Who You Are

When you commission me to depict your energy or the energy of a space, I take the time to explore and understand the focus of my piece of work. I read the energy you or a space has during the first encounter and soon translate it onto paper to get it out of my head and out into the world. Each piece of work has an electric energy to it, and each piece is unique as it is focused only on a particular, single subject. I generally follow the process below to become inspired by my subject and craft the energy I meet into visual art.

Step 1: Meet the Subject

Whether the subject is you, a friend, or even a space within a building, I meet them in person or as close to in-person as I can. I’ll talk and get to know them a little to feel out their energy and understand who they are as an individual. In this step of the process, I’m just beginning to understand the subject’s energy and essence.

Step 2: Observe the Subject

After our initial conversations, I observe the subject in a natural setting. Many of my subjects choose their home as it’s where they are most comfortable. I see how they interact with their surroundings, others who pass through their lives, and their general environment. I gather a greater understanding of my subject’s energy in this stage and can truly begin seeing how they communicate with every item and person in their life.

Step 3: Craft the Subject

After I understand my subject and visualize their energy in my unique mathematical view, I begin sketching and putting what I see down on paper. Mixing my energy readings from the initial meet and the observation period, I produce a final piece of work that depicts the subject’s energy wonderfully.
